Little Rock Local | May Edition

by Kehinde Wiley via arkansasartscenter.com

I'm a little late getting this post published, but nevertheless, here it is: a roundup of arts things I'm looking forward to most this month in Little Rock (and beyond—Memphis is so close!).

May 1-3: Beale Street Music Festival

I attended and found out that Jenny Lewis is just as fabulous live as I've always imagined she would be.

May 2: Argenta Arts Festival and NLR Mini Maker Faire

An ingenious pairing of arts and innovation in downtown North Little Rock.

May 5-16: Project Elan at The Rep

Some of the kids who've come out of The Rep's Summer Musical Theatre Intensive, which is in its 10th year, helped write the script and music for this production. (Special event: Project Elan Songwriters' Concert on May 12.)

May 7: Building 30 Americans at Arkansas Arts Center (6 p.m. lecture)

30 Americans collectors Donald and Mera Rubell and Juan Roselione-Valadez discuss building the AAC's current exhibit, 30 Americans, in a panel facilitated by the AAC's Todd Herman.

May 7: Co-Opt with UALR at Oxford american and Annex South on Main

This showcase begins at 5 p.m. with an exhibit of work from every visual art department at UALR in the Oxford American annex. At 7 p.m., the focus shifts to performance arts onstage at South on Main.

May 8: Thea Foundation's The Art Department with John Kushmaul

Thea Foundation's awesomely affordable young professionals art event doubles as an opening for John Kushmaul's exhibit, which will be on display through May. The event is 6:30-9 p.m. with a $10 cover.

May 9: South Main Vintage Market

Get your pickin' and findin' on at Bernice Garden. Open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m..

May 11-17: Little Rock Film Festival

Start highlighting your must-sees now! Here's the festival guide. Bonus event: This LRFF-affiliated Summer of '85 Dance Party on May 14 looks fun.

May 16: Jazzlights in the Park at the Clinton Presidential Center Lawn

This eight-hour mini fest has a lineup that includes Rodney Block & The Real Music Lovers, Amasa Hines, That Arkansas Weather, Jonathan Butler and more—all for $20 and benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Central Arkansas.

May 16: The Lone Bellow at Rev Room

Music at 9 p.m. Tickets $15 in advance, $18 at the door. I wrote a tiny preview of the folk/Americana trio for the May issue of Arkansas Life—check it out here

May 22-24: Riverfest

Need I say more? I'll be out of town for a very important wedding, but if I were to be in town, I'd be hitting up Galactic and The Whigs, for sure.

May 29: Last weekend to see Common Threads at Esse

Esse Purse Museum's latest temporary exhibit includes works by Pamela Nelson, Chelsye Mae Garrett, Donna Ward, and Florine Thomason. The exhibit ends May 31.
