Wednesday & Thursday
Calligraphy class with Paperglaze Calligraphy at The Social Type
I've been waiting for Shannon of Paperglaze Calligraphy to come back to Little Rock for a while now, and I am so excited that The Social Type is hosting another round of her calligraphy classes at their shop in the Heights.
Classes are 6-8:30 p.m. April 22 and April 23. Click here to learn what a $100 course fee includes.
Thursday through Sunday
Arkansas Literary Festival at various Little Rock locations
Every spring, the Central Arkansas Library System's Arkansas Lit Fest brings some of the country's most interesting authors, artists, journalists, politicians, and personalities to central Arkansas for a weekend of lectures and workshops. Here are the events that tickled my fancy most (though chances are slim I'll be able to catch everything listed below):
Thursday, 5:30 p.m. (exhibit through June 13): Page Turners with Bryan Collier
Thursday, 7 p.m.: Divine Secrets with Rebecca Wells
Saturday, 10 a.m.: Acts of Empowerment with Karen Joy Fowler, Jamaica Kincaid, and Janis F. Kearney
Saturday, 11:30 a.m.: Mississippi Two by Two with Lisa Howorth and Jamie Kornegay
Saturday, 1 p.m.: Rae-diant Flair with Issa Rae
Saturday, 1 p.m.: Fringe with Amanda Petrusich and Kent Russell
Saturday, 2:30 p.m.: ADHD and Black Tar Heroin with Marilyn Wedge and Sam Quinones
Saturday, 6 p.m.: Stronger Together with Joshua Wolf Shenk
☞ Also, duh, the FOCAL Used Book Sale
Friday
Bronze & Brewskis in the River Market Pavilions
This is the young professionals arm of the Sculpture in the River Market fundraiser. Admission ($30 in advance, $35 at the door) includes food from Copper Grill and Loblolly Creamery, beer and wine from Glazer's and Stella Artois, and music by Jon Willis and the Late Romantics. RSVP on Facebook (and learn more about Sculpture in the River Market) here.
Saturday
Fifth annual Indie Arts & Music Festival (aka Etsy Fest) in Hillcrest
It's been fun watching this once-small craft fair grow from a funky little get-together on the front and back porches of Town Pump to a sprawling, all-day affair on Woodlawn and now, finally, at home up and down Kavanaugh. Expect blocks of vendor booths selling all sorts of Etsy wares plus food trucks, local music, and booze from Rock Town Distillery, Moody Brews, and Budweiser (sponsored by Legends of Arkansas). Click here for a list of vendors and specific location information.
Need more? There's also Artworks at The Rep, the Jewish Food Festival, and Iron & Wine at Juanita's this weekend.
